Director of BP's gulf spill states fund gets his palms dusty

The bp claim centres served their purpose

In June, President Obama tapped lawyer Kenneth R. Feinberg, 64, to supervise the $20 billion account funded by BP to repay sufferers of the Bay Coast petrol spill, making him the country most famous mediator.

Per week, Feinberg departs his Pennsylvania Avenue work area, where the walls are decorated with dozens of images and news articles chronicling his work, to spend time with fishermen amongst others who make their living off the seaside waters.

In a recent interview with The bathing Post, the Brockton, Lump., indigenous, who also oversaw our government Sept. 11 Victim Recompense Fund, chatted about the assignment forwards as he comes to an end emergency claim payments and moves upon to making terminate payments to victims. Excerpts run after:
Have you got met one-to-one with individuals who were stricken by the spill?
I've got sat down manually with 100s of people. I have had the city hall meetings throughout the gulf with huge numbers of people. You can't do this from Washington. You need to come down there, and that is what I've been doing.

The reasons why have the states skyrocketed during the past bi weekly?

People are getting paid. The payments are open-handed. Individuals are saying, "Let's file a claim; we may get paid too." We do not understand yet how many of them are legitimate.
What problems are you experiencing with processing emergency states?

There're 25,000 asserts with absolutely no documentation. Thousands of them say stuff like, "My neighbor got paid; pay me too." Or they declare, "I fish off the gulf to eat bp claim. Send me food store cash." There're 50,000 of them with woefully too little docs.

What was wrong with the bp claim centres? The reasons why did they should be replaced by your operation?
. . It was a disaster bandage approach. Sometimes it went to the proper individuals; usually it went on to the wrong individuals. I know of scenarios where they paid people who were in desperate straits. I've noticed in many illustrations BP paid claimants and the payments appear to be fraudulent.

As it pertains to final payments, you are counseling individuals to take the money. Some are suspicious of whether you're looking out for their finest interests, because BP is paying your firm [Feinberg Rozen LLP] $850,000 a couple of weeks to rush the program. What do you say?
